How to write tasks that are easy to type in the morning

YOBIOKO4 min readUpdated:

In YOBIOKO you type in the morning the tasks you have saved. The same errand can be easy or hard to type depending on how you write it.

Five tips

  1. Keep it short. “Take out the trash”, not “Take the burnable trash to the collection point by 8”.
  2. Include the action. “Book the dentist”, not “Dentist”. You can see what to do.
  3. One thing per task. Split “Laundry and cleaning” into two.
  4. Use words that are easy to spell. Avoid words you often mistype.
  5. Do not rely on symbols or emoji. Emoji are not typed in the morning. Make the words carry the meaning.

Before and after

BeforeAfter
MeetingPrepare the meeting slides
MomCall mom
Shopping (milk, eggs, bread)Buy milk
SUBMIT!!!Submit the report
Gym or somethingGo to the gym
Laundry and cleaningStart the laundry
Prep for tmrwPack my bag for tomorrow
HospitalCall the hospital

When you fix a task, check that it says both what and what to do with it. “Mom” alone does not tell you whether to call her or visit her.

Why wording matters

In YOBIOKO, when the alarm rings you tap “Type tasks” and type each task on the screen as shown. If you stop typing for 5 seconds, the sound rings again. It stops as soon as you continue.

With a long task, or a word you are not sure how to spell, your hands stop more easily. Shorten tasks the night before, and in the morning you only have to type. The 5-second rule is explained in Stop for 5 seconds and it rings again.

Writing shopping and errands

Besides morning routines, tasks can hold everyday errands such as shopping. With your morning alarm, the app shows tasks from those you have not finished yet.

Start with 3 to 5

In settings you can choose how many tasks to type each morning: S (3), M (5) or L (10). S (3) is a good start. On days with fewer saved tasks, practice phrases fill the rest. You can see examples under “See practice phrases” in settings.

On days with many tasks, the app picks from them. Keep every task short when you save it, so any of them is easy to type.

Set regular things to repeat

For things on fixed days, like “Take my medicine” or “Take out the trash”, set Repeat to daily or to certain weekdays. You do not need to add them again every night.

TaskRepeat
Take my medicineDaily
Take out the trashWeekdays (trash day)
Submit the reportNone (that day only)

A task that repeats on certain weekdays is not shown with the morning alarm on other days.

Type it once after you save it

The quickest way to know whether a task is easy to type is to type it.

  1. Save the task in the Tasks tab.
  2. On the Alarms screen, choose the practice option.
  3. Type today's tasks with no alarm.
  4. Rewrite any task where your hands stopped, using shorter or easier words.
