What is snooze? Meaning, and how to change the time on iPhone and Android

Alarm basics5 min readUpdated:

“Snooze” means a short, light sleep. On an alarm, it is the function that stops the sound for now and rings again a little later.

Snooze and Stop

ButtonWhat happens
SnoozeThe alarm stops for now and rings again after a set time
StopThat alarm ends there

For example, if you tap Snooze on a 7:00 alarm, the sound stops for now. With a 9-minute snooze, it rings again at about 7:09. Tap it again and it rings 9 minutes after that. Tap Stop and it does not ring again that morning.

If the alarm repeats every day, it still rings as usual the next day after you tap Stop. Only that one time ends.

How long is it?

Android (Google Clock)10 minutesYes, under “Snooze length” in settings

On iPhone you set it for each alarm. In Google Clock on Android, you set one length for the whole app. On phones with a maker's own clock app, the starting length and how you set it can differ.

Change it on iPhone

On iOS 26 or later, open an alarm and choose the snooze duration. You set it for each alarm. On earlier iOS versions, it stays at 9 minutes.

  1. Open Alarms in the Clock app.
  2. Tap the alarm you want to change.
  3. Check that Snooze is on.
  4. Under Snooze Duration, choose a length from 1 to 15 minutes.
  5. Tap the Done button.

Since it is set for each alarm, you can make it short for weekday alarms and long for days off. For other settings, see How to use alarms on iPhone.

Change it on Android

In the Clock app, go to Settings → “Snooze length”.

  1. Open the Clock app.
  2. Open Settings from the menu at the top right.
  3. Tap “Snooze length” and choose a length.

On the same screen, “Volume buttons” sets what a volume button does while an alarm rings. If you choose snooze, you can snooze by pressing a button, without looking at the screen. For other settings, see How to use alarms on Android.

Turn it off

On iPhone, Snooze is also turned on or off for each alarm. You can turn it off for your morning alarm only and leave it on for the others.

Snooze or two alarms: how they differ

Besides snooze, another way to ring again is to set two alarms. They work a little differently.

Snooze usually counts from the time you tap it. If you tap a 7:00 alarm at 7:03, a 9-minute snooze rings at about 7:12. How it counts can differ a little by app and model. When you want to fix a time, such as “I start moving at 7:10”, setting two alarms at 7:00 and 7:10 keeps the time from shifting.

In the Android Clock app, if two alarms are too close, the first may be canceled. Google's help says to leave 5 minutes or more.

Why was iPhone snooze 9 minutes?

Old mechanical alarm clocks are said to have been unable to make snooze exactly 10 minutes because of their gears. A little under 10 was chosen, and that length carried over to digital clocks. That is the commonly told story.

There is no clear record behind it, so it is best taken as “this is what people say”. On an iPhone today, 9 minutes is just one of many lengths.

How to choose a snooze length

There is no right length. It is easier to choose if you work back from the time you leave home.

  1. Decide when you leave home. Example: 7:40.
  2. Take away the time you need to get ready. Example: with 30 minutes, 7:10 is the time you start moving.
  3. Decide the time of the first alarm. Example: 7:00.
  4. Count how many snoozes fit in between. With 10 minutes, one. With 5 minutes, two.
Your morningExample length
Little time before you must start moving1 to 5 minutes
Some time to spareLeave it at 9 or 10 minutes
Days offLonger, such as 15 minutes

Decide how you use snooze

Many alarms let you snooze as many times as you like. Deciding how many times you will use it makes mornings easier to plan.

Some apps cap the count. YOBIOKO limits snooze to 2 times. See Snooze is limited to 2 times.

Common questions

How many times can I snooze?

It depends on the app and the model. If there is no setting for the count, decide it yourself, such as “only once”.

What happens if I leave the alarm without tapping anything?

Google's Clock app has a “Silence after” setting, where you choose how long an alarm keeps ringing if you do not stop it. What happens after that can differ by model and OS version. Test it once before an important morning.

Does it ring in silent mode after a snooze too?

The sound after a snooze is also an alarm sound. Clock alarms ring in silent mode. For each case, see Will my alarm ring in silent mode, airplane mode or with the phone off?.
