iPhone alarm not going off or too quiet? An 8-point checklist

YOBIOKO4 min readUpdated:

Alarms in the iPhone Clock app ring even in silent mode. If yours does not ring or is too quiet, check these in order.

Find it by symptom

First, pick the row closest to your problem. The numbers on the right are the numbers in the checklist below.

SymptomCheck these first
It did not ring at all3, 4, 5
It only vibrated, with no sound2
It was too quiet1, 6
Headphones or a speaker were connected7
It rang at a time you did not expect3, 8

Checklist

  1. Volume: raise the “Ringtone and Alerts” slider in Settings → Sounds & Haptics. This sets the alarm volume. If you turn on “Change with Buttons”, the volume buttons on the phone change it too.
  2. The alarm's sound: open Clock → Alarms → your alarm and check that Sound is not set to “None”. With “None”, it only vibrates.
  3. AM and PM: make sure 7:00 is not set to 7:00 PM.
  4. Repeat days: check that the days you want are selected. An alarm with no repeat days rings only the next one time.
  5. The switch: check that the alarm is switched on (green).
  6. Attention Aware Features: on Face ID models, the sound can get quieter while you look at the screen. Change it in Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Attention Aware Features.
  7. Headphones and speakers: check both the volume of the connected device and of the iPhone itself. Even with headphones connected, the alarm also plays through the built-in speaker.
  8. The Sleep schedule alarm: a wake-up alarm made in Health → Sleep is a separate setting from Clock alarms. Check its time and sound apart from your regular alarms.

Screen names and layout can differ by iOS version.

How iPhone alarms behave

Alarms in the iPhone Clock app behave in fixed ways. Knowing them makes it easier to narrow down the cause.

SituationWhat happens
Silent mode, Do Not DisturbThey do not affect the alarm sound. It rings even when they are on
Headphones are connectedIt plays through both the built-in speaker and the headphones
You use StandByHaptics for alarms are off. If the sound is “None”, you cannot notice it
You changed the time by handThis can affect alarms. Keep the time set automatically

For more on each situation, see Will my alarm ring in silent mode, airplane mode or with the phone off?.

If it still does not ring

When you test, go in this order.

  1. Make one new alarm and set it 1 minute ahead.
  2. In Sound, choose a built-in sound.
  3. Turn off the screen and wait.
  4. If it rings, look again at the time, days and Sound of your original alarm.
  5. If it does not ring, raise the volume slider and test again.

If the new alarm rings but the original does not, it is quicker to delete the original and make it again.

For apps other than Clock

Many third-party apps used notifications for alarms, so they could be silent in silent mode. From iOS 26, a system called AlarmKit lets apps ring in silent mode too. See What is AlarmKit?.

If an app's alarm does not ring, check in the app's item in Settings that alarms and notifications are allowed for that app.

With YOBIOKO

YOBIOKO uses AlarmKit. Open Settings → YOBIOKO and check that alarms and notifications are allowed.

Common questions

Did it stay silent because the phone was in silent mode?

Alarms in the Clock app ring even in Silent mode or Do Not Disturb. Look for another cause by going down the checklist.

I raised the volume with the side buttons. Why is the alarm still quiet?

When “Change with Buttons” is off, the volume buttons may not change the alarm volume. Raise the slider in Settings → Sounds & Haptics.

It stopped ringing after I changed the sound to a song.

Switch back to a built-in sound and test it. For picking songs, see How to use a song as your alarm sound.

It must have rung, but I do not remember stopping it.
