No memory of turning off your alarm? 7 things to review

Alarm basics5 min readUpdated:

The alarm must have rung, but you do not remember stopping it. Here are the settings and placement you can review.

The 7 things to review (quick table)

On a morning when you do not remember stopping the alarm, review your settings and placement one by one. Going from the top saves time.

7How you stop itChoose a way that takes an extra step

1. First, check that it really rang

When you do not remember stopping it, sometimes it did not ring at all. Check AM and PM, the weekdays, the volume, and that the sound is not set to “None”.

The Google Clock app has a setting that stops an alarm by itself after it rings for a while (“Silence after”). If the alarm stopped and nobody stopped it, look here. In the Clock app, tap the More icon and then Settings.

One tap cannot stop it. YOBIOKO, the alarm you stop by typingSee the app

2. Change where you put it

By your pillow, you can stop it while lying down. Where you cannot reach without standing, stopping it means moving your body.

Choose the place like this.

3. Change the sound

If you have used the same sound for a long time, try another one. Choose a sound with a clear start. To use a song, see How to use a song as your alarm sound.

After you change it, ring it once and check that you can hear it from where you sleep.

4. Review volume and vibration

With low volume, it is harder to notice even when it rings. Turn vibration on as well.

5. Decide how you use snooze

If you press snooze again and again, you may not remember which one you stopped. Decide the count and the time. See What is snooze?.

6. Split it into two alarms

Do not rely on one alarm. Set two a little apart. You can also split them across devices, such as a phone and an alarm clock.

In the Google Clock app, if two alarms are too close together, the first one may be canceled. Leave at least 5 minutes between them.

Put the second one in a different place and give it a different sound. For choosing a clock, see Types of alarm clocks and how to choose.

7. Change how you stop it

Tapping a button is an easy way to stop an alarm, which also means it stops with just a move of your hand. Some apps add a step, such as solving math, taking a photo or typing text.

The differences are in 6 ways alarm apps make you stop the alarm.

Steps for the night before

  1. Check the alarm time, AM and PM, and the weekdays.
  2. Check that the switch is on.
  3. Raise the volume and check that the sound is not set to “None”.
  4. Plug in your phone and put it in the place you chose.
  5. Set a second alarm or an alarm clock.

Checking in the same order every night means you miss less.

With YOBIOKO

YOBIOKO is an app where the alarm does not stop until you finish typing today's tasks. The sound rings again if you stop typing for 5 seconds, and snooze is limited to 2 times. There is also a wake-up check that asks once more after you stop it.

Common questions

Can I check later whether it rang?

Open the Clock app and look at the alarm's switch, time and weekdays. The Google Clock app may show a message with the reason, such as notifications being off or the volume being low. To be sure, set an alarm a few minutes ahead and see if it rings.

Should I turn snooze off?

Either is fine. If you use it, decide the count and the length first. If you do not, on iPhone you can turn snooze off for each alarm.

If I put it far away, will it be harder to hear?

It can be. After you place it, ring it once and check that you can hear it where you sleep. If it is hard to hear, raise the volume or change the sound.
